Thomas Barrack did the opposite to what others real estate investors would have done when he set up Colony Capital in 1991 to buy estate loans from busted S&Ls. Unlikely as it may have seemed at the time, his move turned out bankable since the company now manages $34 billion in assets, along with $18 billion in 16 commercial real estate and distressed debt-focused funds. But this descendant of Lebanese immigrants to Los Angeles has started to build his fortune long before Colony’s establishment, mainly through buying out-of-favor assets. Among his most successful buyouts can be mentioned the $200 million in Middle East real estate and $534 million in non-performing German real estate loans. As for his most unconventional investments, they include Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and a $24 million loan to photographer Annie Leibowitz.
