Eleanor Carol Barr, the wife of Kentucky Republican congressman Andy Barr. According to Rep. Barr’s official congressional website, Carol Barr, was originally from Georgetown, Kentucky, where she attended Scott County High School. Barr went on to study communication and information at the University of Kentucky. Rep. Barr noted in a tweet on May 18 that his appreciation of the work of teachers had been “enhanced” as he and his wife had been homeschooling their daughters.

In 2012, Barr narrated an ad for her husband’s re-election campaign. Blogger the Bluegrass Conservative commended Rep. Barr for choosing his wife to narrate writing, “Those that have met Carol know that she is a loyal and supportive wife to Andy and is a joy to be around at any campaign rally. It’s a solid decision to have Carol narrate the ad because this year it is the wife and mother who is a key demographic to target this cycle.”

Barr was an employee of Pfizer and had been the executive director of the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship in Lexington. During Rep. Barr’s re-election campaign in 2018 against Democrat Amy McGrath, a New York Times reporter asked the congressman if he felt that the term “feminist” was pejorative, he responded by noting that his wife was a “working spouse.”

Rep Barr said in a 2013 interview with The Georgetown News-Graphic that his wife’s stepfather worked at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Georgetown, Kentucky for more than 25 years.

Cause of Death

A statement from Barr’s chief of staff Mary Rosado, via WKYT’s Garrett Wymer read, “Congressman Andy Barr’s wife Carol passed away suddenly last night at the family home in Lexington. During this tragic time, we respectfully ask for privacy for Congressman Barr and his family to grieve Mrs. Barr being called home to heaven. Congressman Barr may release a more detailed statement at a later date, but right now is solely focused on being a father to his two beautiful daughters.”

As news of Barr’s passing spread, Kentucky’s major political figures issued statements of condolences. The chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky Mac Brown paid tribute to Carol Barr in a statement that read:

“Our hearts go out to the Barr family at this tragic news. While there are no words that can heal the pain of losing a loved one, we pray together that God will comfort Congressman Andy Barr, their daughters, and the entire family through this very difficult time.”

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear tweeted:

“Britainy and I are heartbroken for U.S. Rep. Andy Barr and his family tonight at the sad news of the unexpected passing of the congressman’s wife, Carol. We are praying for the Barr family.”

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement:

“Elaine and I are stunned and heartbroken at the news of Carol’s passing. Her warmth filled whatever room she entered and her contributions made Kentucky a better place for all of us. And to Eleanor and Mary Clay, Carol was a wonderful role model and source of constant love. We send our sincere condolences to Andy, their family, and his staff at this terribly painful time.”
