En fin d’année 2018, Natnael Tesfatsion se révèle à 19 ans sur les courses chinoises, en terminant 7, 4, 3, 5 puis 4 d’étapes sur le Tour du lac Taihu, au sprint. Un mois plus tard, il se classe 6 de deux étapes sur le Tour de Fuzhou et quinzième du classement général.

Repéré par ces bonnes prestations, il est recruté en 2019 par Dimension Data-Qhubeka, réserve de la formation Worldtour du même nom.
