Friday Zico (born 1 November 1994) is a South Sudanese footballer who plays as an attacking left winger or defender for Cockburn City SC in the National Premier Leagues Western Australia.
Personal life
Zico was born in a town called Magwi in South Sudan), and spent his early life in a refugee camp near the Ugandan city of Gulu, after his parents fled the Sudanese Civil War. In 2004, he and his family were accepted as refugees by Australia, and settled in the city of Perth, where he attended Melville Senior High School. In 2006 Zico started his youth career at Fremantle United Soccer club spending 3 years playing for the club under 13s, 14s and 15s team, before moving to Cockburn City Soccer club to further his development with their under 16s Premier team. In 2010 Zico moved to Melville City FC playing for their Man’s Reserve Team in which he collected Player Of The Year and League Top goal Scorer in the Reserve League. In 2011 Zico signed with Fremantle City playing Division One as a League player at the age of 17, he went on to make 17 first team appearance. In 2012 Zico performance attracted the attention of Footballwest National Training Centre Coach Kenny Lowe who offered Zico a scholarship in the National Training Center after a Successful trial. In January 2012 Zico got selected to represent Australia u19s Schoolboys Tour of UK & Ireland after a successful tour Zico came back to Australia to further develop his skills under the guidance of Kenny Lowe and Gareth Naven at the NTC.
International career
On the 8th of June 2015 Zico made his debut as second-half substitute for South Sudan National team in an International friendly match against Kenya which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Kenya. 5 days later on the 13th of June 2015 Zico made his full International appearance against Mali in South Sudan first ever 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match which ended in a 2-0 defeat. On 1 September 2015 Zico was called up to the South Sudan national football team training camp to prepare for their 2017 African cup of Nation qualification match against Equatorial Guinea, however Zico sustained a serious knee injury during training, which will keep him out of action for 9-14 months.
