Rose entered Duke with the intention of going to medical school, but interned with Senator B. Everett Jordan and pursued a legal degree instead. In 1968, he graduated from the Duke University School of Law. His marriage to Mary King ended in 1980, and he has been dating Amanda Burden, a New York socialite and city employee, since 1993.
