A comedian and actor, Richard Lewis is most widely recognized for his work as a stand-up comedian in the early 80’s, and for his role on the television show, “Anything But Love”. He also appeared on a number of other shows including, “Rude Awakening”, “Everybody Hates Chris”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, and “Two and a Half Men”. Born June 29, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, he began his performing career as a stand-up comedian in the ’70s while working for an ad agency by day. His numerous appearances on Late Night with David Letterman in the ’80s increased his popularity and lead to his own television specials on HBO. He starred in an ABC sitcom with Jamie Lee Curtis called Anything But Love, which ran for four seasons, and went on to appear in other television programs as well as films such as Robin Hood: Men with Tights, Wagons East! and Once Upon a Crime. In 2001, Lewis promoted his book The Other Great Depression on The Howard Stern Show. The book chronicled his battle with (and recovery from) alcoholism, citing his initial day of sobriety as August 4, 1994. Lewis is known for always wearing all-black clothing and Converse sneakers, as well as his signature gestures of tearing at his hair (which earned him the nickname The Prince of Pain) and placing his right hand on his forehead then stretching his arm outward as he makes his point. He also seemingly refers to long pieces of paper with notes on them during his performances, then extemporaneously delivers his lines. Lewis is lifelong friends with actor/comedian/producer Larry David and reunited with his childhood friend on the television program Curb Your Enthusiasm.
