Afeni Shakur net worth: Afeni Shakur was an American philanthropist and ex-Black Panther who had a net worth of $50 million at the time of her death in 2016. Afeni Shakur is probably best known for being the mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur. Throughout her life, she was actively involved in music industry and philanthropy. One year after Tupac’s tragic death in 1996, she founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) and Amaru Entertainment with the money made from her son’s posthumous albums. Ever since, the Georgia-based foundation provides art programs for young people, while Amaru Entertainment is the holding company for all Tupac’s unreleased material. In addition to these two foundations, Afeni also launched a fashion clothing line, Makaveli Branded, seven years after her son’s death. Established to keep Tupac’s legacy alive through fashion, Makaveli Branded donates a portion of each sale to the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation. Early in her life, Afeni Shakur was a member of the African-American revolutionary socialist organization, The Black Panther Party. She was accused of taking part in numerous bombings as a member of the organization and she acted as her own criminal defense attorney at the court hearings. Tupac’s birth father was one of Afeni’s fellow former black panthers named Billy Garland. Afeni eventually married another black panther named Mutulu Shakur who became Tupac’s step-father. Afeni Shakur died on May 2nd, 2016 in Sausalito, California at the age of 69.
Tupac’s Death: Tupac without a will at the age of 25 in 1996. During his final years he was primarily supported through advances and loans paid by Death Row Records. Death Row paid Afeni Shakur $16,000 per month and covered rent payments for homes in California and Georgia. A forensic accountant would later discover that Tupac owned no major assets at the time of his death. No real estate, no stocks, no retirement accounts. He had $105,000 in a single checking account. Afeni quickly moved to sue Death Row records and threatened to prevent distributor Interscope Records from releasing a highly-anticipated posthumous album. Interscope, thanks largely to Jimmy Iovine, stepped in and provided the estate with $5 million payments. Interscope also forced Death Row to forgive half of a $5 million debt that Tupac had accumulated with the label. Furthermore, Tupac’s royalty rate was increased from 12% to 18%. Over the ensuring decades, Tupac’s estate would earn tens of millions of dollars in the form of royalties, licensing deals and more. The value of Tupac’s intellectual property rights alone were worth tens of millions, perhaps more.
